Today the team divided into smaller groups for work projects. Craig, Daniel, and Aaron spent the day constructing one of two free standing large swings that we hope to finish this week along with several sets of stairs for the outdoor school auditorium.
Jacob, Emily and Becca assisted with the construction during the morning and in the afternoon they played with the children and helped with homework.
Gail worked in the onsite medical clinic and saw nine patients with problems ranging from prenatal care to heel pain and gallstones. She will also see patients tomorrow and Friday.
Linda and Kara accompanied several missionaries from the Home to do the weekly shopping which took four hours. It takes a lot of groceries to feed approximately 75 people three meals a day! Taking pictures is not allowed in the local markets. Below, Linda is pictured sorting school supplies that the team brought down for the New Life school.
Ethan spent a great portion of the day playing in the volcanic ash left over from a recent eruption of the volcano Pacaya.
Today is Daniel's birthday and we celebrated Guatemalan-style! A few of the children made cards for Daniel and at dinner tonight they presented him with the cards, sang "Happy Birthday," and set off a string of very loud Black Cat fireworks in celebration! We had delicious birthday cake along with our dinner of nacho chips, black beans, tomato sauce, and water.
Rainy season in Guatemala is May to November. This means that there is usually a brief rain shower or two in the afternoons. However, due to two tropical storms, we have experienced rain the majority of the time since our arrival. The temperature has also been cool -- in the upper 60s.
Tomorrow, we will continue with work projects. We hope to have individual team members share some of their experiences and additional photos on the blog, so check back soon.
Buenas noches!
